Three Policies Department of Art and Media Course
Purposes and Educational Goals (Diploma Policy)
The world of art incorporating technology, such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality, has made rapid progress in recent years and is drawing much attention. The Department of Information Design, Art and Media Course has produced many graduates who are producing innovations in the new creative world that has emerged with the advancement of science and technology, in the fields of media art, digital entertainment, video, animation, photography, comics and more.
In the future, many new areas of expression will emerge that we cannot imagine today. The Art and Media Course aims to foster young people who continuously take on the challenge of developing unknown modes of expression that will revolutionize the worlds of digital art and digital creation, including in the advertising and entertainment industries.
In order to realize this, Art and Media Course graduates need to be able to view the current era from their own perspective, as leaders who play pioneering roles in new creative fields, and produce works that demonstrate their ability to create new value and functions for society.
The curriculum of the Art and Media Course is organized dynamically to foster these talents. Students who acquire a command of technologies for media expression in the Internet age, the ability to analyze the current era and trends in society, and the ability to comprehensively produce original works that envision new world receive bachelor’s (BFA) degrees.
Curriculum Policy
The Art and Media Course systematically organizes and implements a curriculum based on the following policies so that students can achieve the goals indicated in the Diploma Policy.
Among the introductory first- and second-year courses, in the first-year introductory classes students acquire basic knowledge and skills related to media arts, such as video and animation production exercises, basic knowledge of programming, and 3D modeling methods. There are classes offering hands-on experience with digital fabrication, which connects data and objects, and unique classes focusing on interfaces that connect spaces and data. In the second-year workshop, students learn specialized skills by selecting creative exercises using new technologies such as VR, drones, 3D printers and biotechnology. The program also aims to raise students’ self-awareness through presentations and feedback from teachers in review sessions.
In applied education from the third year onward, students produce works based on their own individual themes. The mastery of media art technologies is important, but the exercises in this part of the program are more geared toward creation of original works that require conceptual and thinking ability.
In the fourth year, students deepen their planning, presentation and research, and complete graduation projects as culminations of their four years of study.
To evaluate the results of study, rigorous grading is carried out based on criteria specified in advance. These results are then utilized for further improvement of educational methods.
Admissions Policy
We live in a time when rapid changes are taking place in every field due to technological advances. We believe that in response to such changes in society, in the world of art and design, the importance of the power to create and to express outside of ready-made frameworks is becoming ever more important in order to open up a new era.
Based on the educational content of the Diploma Policy and the Curriculum Policy, the Art and Media Course seeks students who are motivated to absorb a broad range of research fields and explore on their own initiative, while maintaining an awareness of the media age.
In addition, we seek students who are willing to actively incorporate new sensibilities from a media point of view, as they enter a vast creative world including a wide range of areas of expression such as photography, film, animation, manga, and illustration.
We seek students in the Art and Media Course who have a command of media equipment as tools, while possessing the thinking ability and concepts to grasp the essence of creation within the media art field and take the initiative in accepting new challenges.
Admission examinations evaluate proficiency level in terms of basic observation and composition in a creative context. Students are also assessed on their ability to interpret text passages, establish themes based on unique viewpoints, and create works that clearly achieve an expression of intent based on creative thinking.
