Admission Requirements for Research Students
The following is an English translation of relevant information for international students, excerpted from the application procedures in Japanese. Please refer to the Application Guidelines for further information.
What is a Research Student?
Research Student status is for those who are intending to research deeply about his or her own field of expertise and take a preparatory education for the Tama Art University Master’s Degree Program or Doctoral Degree Program entrance examination. Applicants must have Bachelor’s Degree or higher. The duration of Research Student status is 1-year.

-It is not possible to apply for more than one course.
Requirements
Must have graduated from a 4-year undergraduate degree course, and have been conferred with a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent (including those who will be conferred by March 31, 2025).
Applicants with foreign citizenship must meet the above requirements and also one of the requirements below.*
- Have taken the “Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)” operated by Japan Student Services Organization in November 2022, June 2023, November 2023, June 2024, and in the subject “Japanese as a foreign language”, have a combined score of 260 or higher in reading comprehension/listening and listening-reading comprehension, and a score of 35 or higher in Writing.
- Have taken the “Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)” operated by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services in December 2022, July 2023, December 2023, July 2024, and have passed N1 level .
* Applicants who fall into the categories below are exempted from the above Japanese Language tests.
- Have permission for permanent residence (including special permanent resident).
- Have graduated from Tama Art University or another university in Japan (undergraduate course or graduate course) or expect to graduate by March 31, 2025.
Those who have enrolled as a Tama Art University Research Student in the past and wish to apply for the Research Student admission again must contact the Admissions Section [TEL: 042-679-5605] beforehand.
For those who wish to enroll as a Research Student on a Monbukagakusho Scholarship, the screening process will be different. Please refer to the website below.

Sending the application documents
December 2, Monday to December 9, Monday, 2024. Documents should be postmarked no later than December 9, 2024.
-Application documents mailed from outside Japan must arrive by December 9, 2024.

At Hachioji Campus (2-1723 Yarimizu, Hachioji, Tokyo):
Japanese Painting Course, Oil Painting Course, Graphic Arts Course, Sculpture Course, Ceramic, Glass, and Metal Works Course, Graphic Design Course, Product Design Course, Textile Design Course, Architecture and Environmental Design Course, Art and Media Course, Interaction Design Course, Art Studies Course, and Integrated Design Course examinations.
At Kaminoge Campus (3-15-34 Kaminoge Setagaya-ku, Tokyo):
Drama and Dance Course, and Scenography Design Course examinations.
Screening Process
Applicants will be screened on the basis of a comprehensive assessment of an interview, submitted works (works,portfolio,etc.), and academic transcript from the university the applicant attended.
Examination Schedule
January 24, Friday, 2025 to January 25, Saturday, 2025.
* The examination may also be held on January 26 depending on the number of applicants.
Interview dates will be different for those who only apply for the Research Student admission and also for those who apply for the Master's Degree Program entrance examination.

- - All the necessary forms and the fees should be posted by February 14, Friday, 2025.

- - Japanese Painting Course, Oil Painting Course, Graphic Arts Course, Sculpture Course, Ceramic, Glass, and Metal Works (Ceramic/Glass/Metal) Course, Graphic Design Course, Product Design Course, Textile Design Course, Architecture and Environmental Design Course, Information Design (Art and Media/Interaction Design) Course, and Art Studies Course are located in Hachioji Campus (2-1723 Yarimizu, Hachioji, Tokyo).
- - Integrated Design Course, Drama & Dance Course, and Scenography Design Course are located in Kaminoge Campus (3-15-34 Kaminoge, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo).
- - All new students will enroll in April.
- - If the immigration authorities reject the application for "Authorization of Resident Eligibility" or "Resident Status (Overseas Education)" from February 2025, admission will be automatically canceled. Also, applicants must receive "Resident Status (Overseas Education)" by April 1, 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Are there any classes conducted in English?
All classes are held in Japanese only.
International students are required to submit specified grade of EJU or JLPT taken in the specified dates.
Therefore, we strongly recommend applicants to study Japanese Language beforehand.

Q2. Are there summer programs or short programs?
We do not offer summer programs nor short programs.
Q3. Is there autumn admission?
We do not offer autumn admissions.
All new students are enrolled in the beginning of April.
Q4. How long is the duration for Research Student?
The duration for the Research Student is 1 year in total.
