For Years and Years to Come:New Possibilities in ExchangeThe participants found the online program to be significant for their creative work and futures.“A three-month project was compressed into three days, so it was tough” says Mayu Nishiyama, a third-year Graphic Design student, “but the team came together and it was really fun communicating.”“I want to utilize the light experiments, UV printing and other tech-niques in my illustration and painting,” says Xuechun Yang, a second-year Oil Painting student.“I learned a lot about other disciplines,” says Chunning Chen, a fourth-year Textile Design student, “and this influenced my graduation project.”“The goal was to find a suitable form regardless of discipline,” says Muhan Qi, a second-year Information Design student. “I learned the importance of process in design.” “Color, texture, form, etc.—they each have their own characteristics, and light too is like a material,” says Bowen Huang, a second-year Prod-uct Design student. “I hope to further incorporate the beauty of light and nature into my work.”“ArtCenter’s strong emphasis on research was very instructive,” says Daigo Kuramoto, a second-year graduate student in Graphic Design. Osamu Hataoka2020 Graduate inProduct Design“Ihave more respect now for the hidden strength that comes from patient research.”“I learned the importance of dividing up roles and the drawbacks of my level of English,” Aoi Yachi says, a second-year student in Art and Media. “I want to work in film someday, and collaborating efficiently will always be necessary.”“There were various barriers from being online and from differences in language and discipline,” fourth-year Oil Painting student Kyoka Hosokawa says, “but I learned there are always ways to contribute.”This first attempt to use techniques from remote classes during the pandemic opened up new possibilities for international exchange. Look-ing back on the project, Prof. Mocarski, Chair of the Spatial Experience Design Department at ArtCenter, comments, “Given the energy generat-ed, we have even higher expectations for the exchange in Tokyo in fall 2022.” Prof. Wada adds, “We hope to expand opportunities for joint international research both online and off.” After the program, on Octo-ber 25, 2021, Board Chairman Masanori Aoyagi signed a memorandum on the project ensuring it will continue.“Pacific Rim is a very significant initiative not only for students but for the two universities as well,” says Prof. Wada. “It allows both schools to bring into the fold systems and curriculums they would not otherwise have.
